Garlic, fishes, chicken price rise sharply

Prices of local and imported garlic, fishes and chicken rose sharply in the city’s kitchen markets by the weekend, while soybean oil and vegetables remained unchanged.
Imported garlic and ginger price increased by Tk 30 per kg. Imported garlic was selling at Tk 90 and local product Tk 50 per kg respectively. A week ago, local garlic was selling at Tk 40 per kg and imported one at Tk 60. Imported ginger was selling at Tk 260 and local one at Tk200 respectively in the city markets. It was selling at Tk 230 and Tk 180 last week.
When asked about high price of garlic, a retailer of city’s Khilgaon Bazar said that the prices of garlic increased due to inadequate supply. “I purchased five kilos of garlic (imported) forTk 350 from the Karwan Bazar wholesale market today,” he added.
In most of the city’s kitchen markets, local onion was selling at Tk 35 a kg, while imported onion (India) at Tk 28 per kg and lentil at Tk 110 per kg. Green chili was selling for Tk 80 in the Malibagkitchen market on Saturday.
A 5-kg Rupchanda brand canned soybean oil was selling at Tk 530, while Teer brand
at Tk 530 in the city markets on Saturday.
In the city’s different kitchen markets, prices of different varieties of rice remained unchanged. Coarse rice was selling between Tk 34 and Tk 35 a kg, nazirshail at Tk 49-56 per kg, pyjam at Tk 34, kataribhogh at Tk 75 and Minicate at Tk 52-54 per kg. The prices of fishes went up in the city markets on Friday. Shadat Ali, a trader of the city’s Khilgaon Bazar, told that the supply of different kinds of fishes was insufficient which pushed the prices of fish items higher.
At Karwan Bazar fish market on Saturday, it was found that big size of hilsha was selling at Tk 1200 per piece while a middle size fish at Tk 600 per piece and one at Tk 300 per piece.
A big size pangas fish was selling at Tk 200 per kg while a small size at Tk 140, climbing (local) at Tk 400-600 per kg, ruhi (small) at Tk 300-400 per kg and big-sized ruhi at Tk 400 per kg.
While small varieties of fishes like small frywas sold at Tk 300 per kg, mola at Tk 300, kachachi at Tk 260.
Potato was sold at Tk 20 per kg, tomato at Tk 30, parble at Tk 50 per kg, brinjal at Tk 40 per kg and ladies finger at Tk 50 per kg.
Egg was sold at Tk 30 per hali (four pieces) and sugar at Tk 50 a kg in the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.
Prices of local chickens went up in the city’s kitchen further due to heavy demand. A piece of medium size local chicken was sold at Tk 200 while a big siz chicken at Tk 350-400 yesterday. On the other hand, boiler chickens were selling at Tk 150 per kg.
The prices of crushed spices remained unchanged. Turmeric was selling at Tk 300 a kg, coriander seeds (dhania) powder at Tk 120 per kg.
Per kg of beef was selling at Tk 300 and mutton at Tk 400-420 in the city’s kitchen markets.
