The Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal of Netrakona on Wednesday sentenced five persons to death by hanging for gang-raping an adolescent girl at Kumarkhali area under Purbadhala upazila of the district.
The judge of the tribunal [District and Session Judge] Dr. AKM Abul Kashem delivered the judgment at the crowded court room, saying that the convicted persons namely Shamim, 35, Bikon, 17, Tikon, 20, Tapas, 18, of the village Kalduar and Rup Mia of village Budhi under Purbadhala upazila of the district to be hanged until their death.
The tribunal also fined them Tk 25,000 each. Out of the convicts, Rup Mia is absconding.
In the verdict, the judge said the charge of gang rape was proved against the convicts beyond any doubts.
The tribunal acquitted Eklas of the charge as the allegations against him was not proved.
The convicts kidnapped and gang raped the victim, an adolescent girl of village Bahadurpur under Netrakona sader upazila, at Kumarkhali area in the night on July 20, 2002.
The victim was going to her relative’s house along with her mother and brother-in-law by a rickshaw through Purbadhala-Kumarkhali road.
When they reached Kumarkhali area, the miscreants, brandishing lethal weapons, waylaid their rickshaw and took the girl to a house near a jungle to violate her.
Later, police recovered the girl from Kumarkhali bridge area. The victim filed a rape case with Purbadhala police station against six persons including the five convicts the following day.
Police after investigation submitted charge-sheet against the six accused persons on November 8, 2002.
Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Saiful Alam Prodip conducted the case on government side while Advocate Subhas Bonik Ajay and Samir Joarder Bakul appeared for on the defendants.
