UNB, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday asked the police to gain people’s confidence by ensuring the overall security of public life and property and ensuring their welfare.
“You’ll always have to work devotedly for ensuring the welfare of the common people and ensure their security so that you can gain trust and confidence,” she said.
The Prime Minister said this after inaugurating the newly-built ‘Police Plaza’, a newly-built commercial building of Bangladesh Police Welfare Trust in the city’s Gulshan area.
She also asked the police to be mindful so that people do not suffer in any way and continue to render services. “You’ll have to fulfill the aspirations of people.”
Assuring the members of the Bangladesh Police that the AL government would continue providing whatever necessary for the wellbeing of this force, Hasina said: “It’s the duty of our government to look into your (police) welfare.”
Referring to her earlier directives at an Ecnec meeting, Hasina suggested the authorities concerned to come up with a proposal for developing all the remaining dilapidated police stations at upazila and district levels through a development project to avert lengthiness since it could be implemented subject to the availability of budgetary allocations.
Underscoring the need for arranging an adequate number of police vehicles and boats considering the geographical location of the country as well as the huge workload, she said that her government is aware of that.
Turning to the maritime boundary verdicts over Myanmar and India and the recent exchange of LBA ratification document with India, the Prime Minister said that her government has been solving problems one after another with the neighboring countries.
With the ratification of the LBA, she noted, the 68-year sufferings of enclave people have been removed and Tk 200 crore has been earmarked in the proposed budget for their welfare.
She said that the Awami League government had taken steps to ensure development in all fields for which Bangladesh has now been regarded as a role model of development.
The Prime Minister said, the sooner Bangladesh would be able to become solvent financially, the more it could be able to solve the problems of all, including this Police force. “Bangladesh would become as a peaceful, terrorism and militancy-free country in South Asia and we’ve working to this end.”
Listing various socio-economic achievements of her government in various fields, the Prime Minister said that the current poverty rate in Bangladesh is now 22 percent and hoped that Bangladesh would be freed from poverty in future.
She extended her heartfelt thanks to those members of Bangladesh police and other law enforcement agencies who have sacrificed their lives and got injured while tackling the mayhem unleashed by the BNP-Jamaat before the January-5 polls and during the hartal and blockade for 92 days early this year.
About the Police Plaza, Hasina hope with the establishment of such nice Plaza at a scenic place near Hatirjheel, the income from this Plaza would be utilized properly for the welfare of the police members.
IGP AKM Shahidul Haque delivered the welcome address at the programme.
