The Gaibandha Liberation Day- 2014 was observed on Sunday through daylong programmes in the district town amid huge festivity and enthusiasm among the people from all walks in life.
The Gaibandha Hanadarmukta Dibash Udjapon Committee in association with various organisations and freedom fighters brought out a huge victory procession in the morning from Purbopara area and paraded the main streets in the town.
Hundreds of people, including freedom fighters, students and teachers, officials and employees, socio-cultural and political activists, civil society members, professionals, public representatives, and common people took part in the procession.
Zila parishad Administrator Advocate Syed Sams Ul Alam Hiru, Aminul Islam Golap, Abu Bakar Siddik, Ranjeet Bakhsi Surya, Mahmudul Haque, Mossarraf Hossain Dulal, Mamtazur Rahman and Mohammad Iqbal addressed a pre-procession rally there.
At noon, district unit of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad brought out another colourful victory procession, participated by a large number of freedom fighters and common people, from Public Library premises in the town.
Later, Commander of district unit of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad valiant freedom fighter Mubinul Haque presided over a discussion meeting arranged at Public Library premises.
Valiant freedom fighter Mahbub Elahi Manju, Bir Pratik, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rev) of Gaibandha Saleha Begum and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ashraful Momin Khan addressed the discussion, among others.
In the discussions, the speakers narrated the genocide, atrocities and crimes committed against humanity by the Pakistani occupation forces and unprecedented heroism of the Bengali nation that fought the War of Liberation to snatch away independence in 1971.
