Enraged at being asked to open and clean the school’s classrooms, a peon cum night guard hit the female headmaster with an iron rod. He did not stop just by hitting, but humiliating her. Headmaster Nilufa Khatun, who was publicly beaten and injured, is now mentally broken.
The incident took place at Barihati Government Primary School under Pagla Police Station in Gafargaon Upazila on Thursday afternoon. The name of the accused is Rakib Khan.
After the incident, the Pagla police OC Raseduzzaman said, the police continued their operation to arrest the accused Daftary Rakib Khan. Later on Thursday night, Rakib was arrested by Pagla police.
Although the school is closed due to the epidemic virus corona, the teachers are going from house to house and giving assignments to the students. Teachers of Barihati Government Primary School including Nilufa Khanam were busy in this work on Thursday. After noon, the work sheet of the teachers was over. Later, headmistress Nilufa Khanam called Rakib peon and asked him to take the work sheet but Rakib did not listen. Later the teachers went to the school and collected work sheets. When Rakib went to the school at that time, Nilufa Khanam told Rakib to clean the school. This made Rakib angry. There was a quarrel between them about this. At one stage, Rakib Khan hit Nilufar on the head with a pickaxe. Rakib did not stop at this and started punching Nilufa with abusive language. Nilufa Khanam, the headmistress, was injured when people from the area came and stopped the office.
Upazila Education Officer (Acting) Salma Akhter said the binder has been appointed to do the necessary work for the school and teachers. In this situation, beating the head teacher without doing school work is not desirable in any way. Of course, necessary steps will be taken in this regard after investigation.
Pagla police officer in charge (OC) Rasheduzzaman said that the police continued the operation to arrest the accused immediately after the incident. Later that night, the police detained him for questioning.
