The influential quarter has occupied illegally the land for potato seeds cold storage project of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) at Gabtoli area in the capital.
As a result the construction of BADC’s seed preservation cold storage has been hampered, since the occupant ignored offer for the discussion and notice for vacating the land.
The BADC has filed a General Dairy (GD) against local Commissioner, who occupied the land for cold storage. The Commissioner and his followers constructed building and different establishments in the BADC’s land violating the government direction.
Senior Assistant Director of Gabtoli BADC’s farm Shafiqul Islam Sabuj filed the GD seeking the police intervention to recover the government land. The construction of seed preservation cold storage is very essential for developing quality seeds for the farmers of Dhaka region, he said.
Chairman of BADC Md Nasiruzzaman said, Gabtoli farm is a priority basis project of the BADC to supply high quality seeds to the farmers of Dhaka region, so “We do everything to recover the important land,” he said.
The government gives priority to the food production, Gabtoli farm has been playing important role in preservation of quality seeds for the farmers of Dhaka Division.
The Gabtoli a seed growing farm is situated on 117 acres of land of which 80 acres of land have been brought under seed growing project. In 2015, the government drafted the project to build seed preservation cold storage here. But the project could not be implemented due to illegal occupation.
The BADC produces around 6.37 lakh tonnes seeds of different crops in last five years of which 5.5 tonnes seeds were distributed among the farmers. The Gabtoli farm has remained significant in the of BADC’s success.
