CWASA Board meeting: Future dev plans to meet demands of consumers

The 28th Board Meeting of Chittagong WASA held at its board room on Saturday evening with CWASA Board chairman and Secretary of Public Service Commission Md. Shahjahan Ali Mollah in the chair. The minutes of the 27th Board meeting was read and approved in the meeting and discusses six agendas of the 28th board meeting. The reports of development acitivisities of the CWASA, reports of implemented projects, income expenditure statements, reports of chief revenue officer and actitivities of the Magistrates and developments of ongoing projects were submitted befor e the board meeting, CWASA sources said. The meeting unanimously approved the minutes of the 27th board meeting . Members of the Board including Additional Secretary of Finance Ministry Nazmul Sakib, Md. Solaiman Seth, Showkat Hossain FCA, Engr. Sadeque chowdhry, Md. AFM Kabir Manik, Mrs Anjuman Ara Begum, AM Anowarul Kabir, Asif Siraj, Md. Nasiruddin Mahmud, Jafar Ahmed Sadeque, and the Managing Director of CWASA AKM Fazlullah were present in it. The senior officials of CWASA including Deputy Managing Director (Admn & Finance) , Secretary of CWASA extended cooperation towards the Board meeting.
Managing Director of CWASA Engr. Fazlullah also presented a brief reports over ongoing development activities of the authority including Karnaphuli Water Supply Project and the proposed water treatment plant of Boalkhali. He said CWASA has been implementing a huge contract package – Karnaphuli Water Supply Project (KWSP), in two phases with the financial assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at Pomra Rangunia upazila , 30 kilometers off Chittagong city.
At present CWASA gets 190 to 200 m liters per-day from 96 deep tube-wells and the 90 million liters capacity Mohora Water Treatment Plant to meet some 40 percent of the water demand of 500 million liters. Implementation of KWSP Phase-1 involving Tk 15.1 billion would help meet 70 percent demand for water in the city by this year and that of KWSP phase -2 involving Tk 44.91 billion would meet 90 percent demand by 2020. Good progress in KWSP phase I and Phase II helped restore prospective donors’ confidence on the increased efficiency and capabilities of CWASA.
The World Bank came up to help revive the project for setting up 90 mn liters Madunaghat Water Treatment Plant at an estimated cost of Tk 3.91 billion under World Bank financed Chittagong Water Supply Improvement and Sanitation Project (CWSISP) involving Tk 10.78 billion.
Under different components of CWSISP, CWASA would set up 11.7-Km transmission pipeline and 94.3-Km distribution pipeline, construct and rehabilitate Kalurghat Booster Pump .
