Shortage of manpower: Functioning of Parashuram Upazila Livestock Office hampered

Shortage of manpower has been hampering the functioning of Parashuram Upazila Livestock Office in Feni district and many posts have been lying vacant for a long time and the office is run with only four officers and staff.
Sources said, seven posts out of 11 have been lying vacant. Some 55,000 families in the upazila are being deprived of having services from the Livestock Office and inadequate supply of medicines and equipment are also hampering the treatment .
According to the livestock office, then are l8 registered dairy farms in the upazila in addition to 55-60 unregistered ones.
Besides, there are 500 other farms including that of poultry and dairy.
In the upazila, there are around 3 lakh cattle, 7000 goat, 4000 sheep 2 lakh ducks, 3 lakh chickens and 4000 pigeons, sources said.
Dairy farmers of the Gotuma, Dakhshin Chandona ,Mirzanagor, Dublachan and Changazi unions said, they are interested to rear ‘Bharma’ type of cow, but they cannot as there is no veterinary doctor in the upazila.
Dairy farmers at Gotuma and Boxmahamud unions said , it is both hazardous and expensive for them to take their animals to veterinary hospital.
They demanded the government to appoint a veterinary doctor in each union.
Upazila Livestock Office source said, it has become too difficult for them to provide services and treatment to huge animals of the upazila due to the acute manpower crisis.
 lt has become impossible to provide services in 4 unions for not having any field officer.’ he said.
Besides, Parashuram Upazila Livestock Officer Ismial Hossain remains absent in office showing lame excuse, it is alleged .
