Fugitive doctor surrenders, sent to jail

A Dhaka court yesterday (Sunday) sent fugitive Dr Atiar Rahman, an assistant professor of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital to jail rejecting his bail petition after he surrendered to the court in a graft case.
Acting judge of Dhaka’s Senior Special Judge Court, Mosammat Zakia Pervin passed the order after Dr Atiar surrendered to the court.
On August 27, two physicians including Dr Atiar fled the dock of the court after hearing that they had been refused bail in the graft case filed against seven people for their alleged mutual conspiracy to embezzle Tk 2,31, 82,920 of the national exchequer on November 16, 2011. Other fugitive is former senior lecturer of Dhaka Medical College, Dr Mohammad Moshiur Rahman.
The seven accused, including four physicians of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital surrendered to the court in a corruption case and sought bail on August 27.
Other two physicians who were sent to the jail rejecting their bail petitions on August 27 are former director of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, retired Brigadier General Bazle Kader and former deputy director Dr Md Faizullah. Other three accused persons are HN Surgical Mart proprietor Habibur Rahman, two cashiers of Dhaka Medical College Nazrul Islam (1) and Nazrul Islam (2). On November 16, 2011, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with the city’s Shahbagh Police Station accusing them of misappropriating the money. The ACC submitted the chargesheet of the case on May 15 this year after investigation.
