VGF wheat case: Fugitive AL leader held

Police arrested a fugitive local leader of Awami League and former Union Parishad Chairman in connection with a case filed against him for illegally shifting 12 metric tons of wheat meant for distribution under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Ulipur police station arrested Mokhlesur Rahman from his residence on Sunday night, AKM Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Officer in-charge of the police station told The New Nation yesterday.
“The case was filed against him in 1994 when Rahman was the chairman
of Gunaiganch Union Parisad under Ulipur Upazila,” he said.
He is also the president of Gunaiganch Union unit Awami League.
Police produced him to the court on Monday and sent him to the jail.
Earlier, the District and Session Judge’s Court of Kurigram sentenced him to three years imprisonment with a fine of Tk 88,000 in the graft case.
He later filed an appeal with the High Court Division against the lower Court’s verdict against him which was subsequently rejected.
