Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Md Shahidul Haque on Monday said, he is hopeful about the Rohingya repatriation.
“I have visited Rakhine state to see the preparation for repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh. After visiting the state, I am hopeful, but it is difficult to say when it will begin,” the Foreign Secretary said this after a function at Dhaka University (DU) on Monday.
“The repatriation issue in any country is a very “complex and difficult” process which cannot be done overnight,” he said.
“Myanmar government has shown the preparations they have taken so far for taking the Rohingyas back from Bangladesh,” he said while describing the visit of a Bangladesh delegation led by Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali to northern Rakhine State on August 11.
Asked about the progress of preparation, he said “I would say something is done.”
He said there are certain things that needed to be in place so that the Rohingyas feel confident to go back to their own homes in Myanmar.
“Some time is needed to that end,” he added.
Myanmar’s Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Minister Win Myat Aye accompanied the Bangladesh delegation during the visit.
