One of the sub goals of the 5th SDG goal is to ‘Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life’ according to the UNDP. Dr. Shirin Sharmin credits the CEO and Managing Director of GDIC Farzana Chowdhury ACII (UK) for being a Local SDG Pioneer by the United Nations Global Compact. As per Dr. Shirin, Ms Chowdhury being a female leader acts as an inspiration for all the millions of women in Bangladesh who have consistently been fighting to break down the existing social barriers and succeeding in their personal undertakings, and with the help of an application like Nibedita, higher power is granted to these aspiring women of our nation.
Achieving these SDG goals and ensuring the existence of all the sub goals by 2030 requires a sense of commitment from as many aspirant companies as possible. Mr. Zunaid Ahmed Palak MP, Honorable State Minister, ICT Division, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh encouraged the private sector of Bangladesh to act like GDIC and collaborate with the government to help them achieve the dream of Digital Bangladesh. The state minister also assured Green Delta Insurance Company full support to help them empower all the women of Bangladesh and proposed effective collaboration in order to improve lives through various initiatives from the ICT sector.
In order to highlight the launch of an application that is still helping to achieve greater gender equality, Ambassador of the US Embassy Dhaka, Her Excellency Mercia Bernicat and Former Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr. A K Abdul Momen were also present as the guests of honor.
Achieving proper socio economic development in Bangladesh without the development of women to a better lifestyle through health, capacity building, lifestyle, financial services and other value added services is problematic, as 52% of our population consists of women. Therefore, when designing an application catering to the needs of women, keeping the flowing factors into consideration is important, which was well attained by Nibedita. Since accidents can always take place in split seconds, GDIC has partnered with various service providers to give the Nibedita policy holders special offers and fast-track services and provided its users with a feature called the panic button.
Roaming around on streets whenever it is dark is deemed to be dangerous and irresponsible by our society. However, for a women earning her own bed or even for a women believing in free lifestyle, this becomes a routine. Application such as Nibedita ensure their security in times like these through their panic button. A simple click on the panic button sends signals to all the possible rescue locations for the woman, including her relatives, GDIC Head office and security service provide. Once the distress message is received these security team appear on spot within a time span of 15 to 30 minutes.
Bangladesh is certainly not far behind in the race of obtaining the SDG goals for by 2030 due to the presence of such initiatives. In the UN Global Compact at the World Leaders Summit in New York. Ms. Chowdhury was honored as one of the ten 2016 Inaugural Class of Local SDG pioneers by H.E. Ban Ki-Moon, and she was also hailed as Women’s Economic Security by the secretary general.
GDIC also focuses on food security to achieve agricultural insurance to safeguard the farmers of our countries, however, we need further initiatives from private sector to attain the goal of no poverty. Bangladesh is a heavily agriculture based countries and in order to exterminate poverty it is essential that more investors are ready to invest in agricultural growth.
Likewise, if Bangladesh as a country intends to meet all the 17 goals, initiatives from only one insurance company are however exemplary but not enough. While Green Delta Insurance Company moves works for the 3rd and 4th goal by their other CSR projects, further organizations need to take up on the responsibility.
Poverty alleviation, democratic governance and peace building, climate change and disaster risk, and economic inequality are some of the hopes from the SDG goals, but with the support from within the nations. Quoting UNDP, “Our track record working across multiple goals provides us with a valuable experience and proven policy expertise to ensure we all reach the targets set out in the SDGs by 2030. But we cannot do this alone.” Similarly, the government or a few companies of Bangladesh cannot do this alone. Dream of a global goal demands the collective effort from our nation.
