The historic May Day was observed on Wednesday with a fresh vow to establish the fundamental rights of the working class people. The theme of day this year was “Build Workers-Owners Unity, Take Oath for Development”. District administration, Labour Welfare Centre , political parties and different Sramik organisations chalked out elaborate programmes in the occassion. Our Correspondent and agencies report :
Khulna (South) Correspondent reports: The historic May Day was also observed in Khulna on Wednesday with a commitment to ensure rights of workers of every sectors across the country.
Different socio-cultural, trade unions and political parties observed the day through various programs.
To mark the day, Khulna Divisional Labor Office, Mill-Factory and Organization Inspection Office, Labor Welfare Center and Industry Relation Institution of Khulna (IRI) organized a discussion meeting at the Divisional Labor Office of Khulna.
Mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Talukdar Abdul Khalek addressed the meeting as the chief guest with Khulna Divisional Commissioner Lokman Hossain Mia in the chair. A colorful rally was inaugurated by KCC Mayor Talukdar Abdul Khalek.
Khulna Metropolitan Commissioner (KMP) Khondokar Lutful Kabir, Deputy Commissioner of Khulna (DC) Mohammad Helal Hossain, Police Superintendent of Khulna S M Shafiullah, Chairman of Bangladesh Jute Association (BJA) Sheikh Sayed Ali, Vice-President of Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) Sheikh Abdul Baki, President of Khulna District Unit Jatiya Sramik League B M Jafar and General Secretary of city unit Sramik League Ranjit Kumar Ghosh spoke as special guests.
Afterwards, “Trikal Sangskritik Goshty” arranged a cultural function.
Earlier, a colorful rally (procession) was brought out led by the Divisional Commissioner Lokman Hossain Mia from city’s New Market area that paraded in Khulna-Dhaka highway and ended at the Labor Office.
Jatiya Sramik League Khulna city and district unit hoisted party flag at the party office, placed floral wreaths at the portrait of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Muzibur Rahman, organized a colorful procession and a discussion meeting followed by a cultural program.
Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) also organized a discussion meeting at the Humayun Kabir Balu auditorium at Khulna Press Club.
Saidpur (Nilphamari) Correspondent: On the occasion of the May Day , Labor Welfare Center arranged a rally and discussion meeting on Wednesday.
A rally started from Pilot High School and ended at Labour Welfare Center premise. Later, a discussion meeting was held at the Labor Welfare Office. UNO SM Golam Kibriya presided over the chair. Upazila Chairman Md Moksedul Momin spoke as the Chief Guest in the meeting.
Former Mayor Janab Akhter Hossain Badal and Contractor Md Shanawaz Hossain Shanu delivered their speech as the special guests of the programme.
At that time, OC Saidpur Thana, Shajahan Pasha, Saidpur Bus, Minibus Workers Union, Labour Union and others present there. Earlier, Labour Welfare Center showed their respect for the Martyr by placing wreath at the Shaheed Minar.
BSS from Rangpur reports: Observance of the historic May Day through colourful programmes and with participation of thousands of working people turned all eight districts of Rangpur division into festive places on Wednesday.
The day was observed with a pledge for building excellent relation between owners and workers, ensuring just rights, welfare and workplace safety of working people to increase productivity and achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The District and Upazila Administrations, Directorate of Labour, organisations of workers, labourers, professionals, socio-cultural, political and volunteer and human rights activists chalked out daylong programmes in observance of the day.
The programmes included hoisting of the national and organisational flags and red flags, releasing balloons, bringing out colourful rallies, processions, human chains, serving improved diets to workers, discussions and cultural functions.
In Rangpur city, Regional Labour Officer of the Directorate of Labour jointly with district administration brought out a rally on the city streets giving the city a festive look followed by a discussion at Town Hall auditorium and cultural function.
Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Joynul Bari attended the discussion as the chief guest with Acting Deputy Commissioner Ruhul Amin Mian in the chair.
Deputy Director of Regional Labour Office Mohammed Sadekuzzaman delivered welcome speech in the discussion participated by government officials, owners of factories and industries and working people.
Deputy Inspector General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments under the Ministry of Labour and Employment Soma Roy discussed importance of the historic day.
District Council Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Police Super Mizanur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Syed Enamul Kabir, Senior Vice-president of Rangpur Chamber Mostoba Hossain Ripon, Labour Affairs Secretary of district Awami League (AL) Gawaherul Islam, its Office Secretary Tauhidur Rahman Tutul, President of district Chhatra League Mehedee Hasan Rony, President of district unit of Jatiya Sramik League (JSL) Abdus Salam Sarker, President of city JSL Rostam Ali, among others, spoke.
On the other hand, dozens of organisations of working people brought out series of colourful processions on the city streets chanting slogans in favour of working people.

Sramik League, Jatiya Bidyut Sramik League, Samajtantrik Sramik Front, Motor Sramik Union and Sommilito Garments’ Sramik Federation, Sommilito Garments’ Sramik Federation, Electronic Sramik Union, Truck and Tank Lorry Sramik League, Karmojibi Nari, Electric Sramik Kallyan Samobaya Samity, Krishi-Farm Sramik Federation, Dokan Karmochari Union participated in the processions.
The district and city units of Awami League (AL), its associate bodies, Communist Party of Bangladesh, JASOD, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, Ganatantry Party, Workers’ Party and many other trade organisations also observed the day.
Later, the District Motor Sramik Union (DMSU) organised another discussion on Kamarpara Dhaka Coach Stand premises in the city with its President Tazul Islam Mukul in the chair.
Organising Secretary of district AL Advocate Anwarul Islam addressed the discussion as the chief guest while General Secretary of DMSU and city unit of JSL Abdul Mazid took part as the main discussant.
The speakers called for reducing wage discrimination to improve living standard of working people and build excellent relations between owners and workers for upholding real sprit of the historic day.
According to reports received here today, the day was observed through similar programmes in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Panchagarh, Thakurgaon and Dinajpur districts of Rangpur division.
BSS from Rajshahi says: The historic May Day was observed here on Wednesday like other parts of the country with a fresh vow to uphold the rights of working people with maintaining harmony between labours and owners.
Marking the day, political parties, trade unions, labour and socio-cultural organisations including Jatiya Shramik League organized various programs including hoisting of national flag atop the offices of trade unions and labour organizations, discussion, rallies and cultural functions.
District administration and Divisional office of the Labour Directorate jointly organized a post-rally discussion at Zila Parishad Auditorium.
Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Jakir Hossain addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi SM Abdul Kadir in the chair.
Director and Registrar of Trade Unions in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions Nasir Uddin, Divisional Deputy Director of the Labour Directorate Razia Sultana, Deputy Director of Industrial Relation Institute Monirul Alam, Director of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sadrul Islam, Deputy Inspector General of Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Mahfuzur Rahman Bhuiyan and Vice-president of Jatiya Shramik League Nur Kutub Alam Mannan also spoke.
Terming the working class as the driving force of the national economy, the speakers said development of a nation is not possible without progress of the working class. They also laid emphasis on greater unity among the working people to establish their legal rights.
Mayor Khairuzzaman Liton stressed the need for the safety of the labors at their working places and reduction of child labors so that they can grow up as healthy citizens of the country.
He mentioned that the present government has contributed a lot for the welfare of the labors in enhancing the salary particularly in the garments sector and also trying to make their work place safer.
Besides, local units of bus, truck, minibus, tempo and mishuk labourers unions, imarat nirman shramik association took out separate processions which paraded the main city streets. The procession was followed by discussion and milad mahfil at their offices.
Apart from this, different political parties including Bangladesh Awami League and working groups brought out colourful rallies, held discussions and cultural functions to mark the day in the city.
