The 15th anniversary of the gruesome grenade attack on an Awami League (AL) rally in the capital on August 21 in 2004 was observed in the district with due respect.
Marking the day, AL, District Unit, its front and associate bodies and its left leaning allies and other political parties and socio-cultural and professional organizations chalked out elaborate programmes in the district.
The programmes included hoisting the national and black flags at half-mast atop at all party offices, bringing out mourning procession, placing floral wreaths at the portraits of Bangabandhu and 24 leaders and workers of Awami League including Ivy Rahman who sacrificed their lives on August 21.
Special prayers and munajat were also offered at different mosques and other places of worships in the district seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of 24 leaders and workers of AL who were assassinated in the fateful day.
Apart from it, a discussion meeting at the arrangement of Sadar upazila AL was held on the premises of Central Shaheed Minar of Gaibandha Poura Park with president of upazila Awami League Rejaul Karim Reja in the chair.
President of district AL Advocate Syed Shams-ul-Alam Hiru addressed the meeting as chief guest and general secretary Abu Bakar Siddique was present as special guest while general secretary of upazila Awami League Aminur Zaman Rinku moderated the function.
The speakers said the gruesome grenade attack was carried out at an anti- terrorism rally of AL at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital aiming to bankrupt the party leadership during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.
A total of 24 people including the then Women Affairs secretary of AL and wife of late Bangladesh president Zillur Rahman Ivy Rahman were killed and over 500 others injured in the attack and many of them became crippled for life, they also said.
They condemned such the heinous crimes and demanded to bring the persons including the masterminds who were involved in the carnage without delay. Almost all the leaders and the workers of district AL and its front and associate organizations participated in the meeting spontaneously.
BSS from Khulna reports: Khulna mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque on Wednesday urged the party leaders and workers to remain careful about conspiracy of making attempt on the life of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to destroy Awami League leadership.
“Conspiracy is still going on to kill Sheikh Hasina,” he said in a meeting in front of party office after a procession on the occasion of observing 21 August grenade attack day.
Mayor Khaleque, also president of Khulna city unit of Awami League, led the procession which paraded different streets. Local Member of Parliament Akteruzzaman Babu, among others, was present.
Mayor Khaleque said the August 21 grenade attack in 2004 was aimed at killing Sheikh Hasina as parts of deep-rooted conspiracy to make a great vacuum in the Awami League leadership.
BNP-Jamaat instigated politics of hatred through the grenade attack, he said and demanded for unveiling masks of all masterminds behind the attacks to ensure their exemplary punishments.
Earlier, district and city units of AL at their respective offices paid tributes to victims of the gruesome grenade attack.
Elaborate daylong programmes were taken in observance of the day. The programs included hoisting of the national flag, party flag at half mast, placing wreaths to portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyrs of August 21 grenade attack and observance of one-minute silence.
BSS from Rajshahi says : The 15th anniversary of the gruesome grenade attack on an Awami League (AL) anti-terrorism rally in Dhaka on August 21 in 2004 was observed in Rajshahi city on Wednesday in a befitting manner as elsewhere in the district.
Different political parties and their front organisations observed the day paying homage to the Martyred of August 21 who sacrificed their lives for establishing terrorism, militancy-free Bangladesh.
The day’s programmes included hoisting the national and black flags at half-mast atop all party offices, placing wreaths at the portraits of leaders and workers of AL including Ivy Rahman who sacrificed their lives on August 21, at 10 am at the respective party offices of AL, Qurankhwani, Milad Mahfil and discussion meetings.
In observance of the day, city unit of Bangladesh Awami League placed wreaths on the portraits of Martyred of August 21 at Swadhinota Crossing in the city this morning.
City unit president and Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Vice-president Shaheen Akhter Rainy and General Secretary Dablu Sarker were present on the occasion.
Afterwards, the unit held a discussion meeting and doa mahfil at the party office with Khairuzzaman Liton, who was present near the Awami League meeting on that day, in the chair.
