The historic May Day was observed throughout the country with a fresh vow to uphold the rights of working people with maintaining harmony between labours and owners on Monday. Various political parties, trade unions, labour and socio-cultural organisations organised various programs including hoisting of national flag discussion meetings, rallies and cultural functions marking the day. Narsingdi Correspondent reports: The historic May Day was observed in the district on Monday as else where in the world with the slogan of making labourers-owners unity to build Sonar Bangla. The day is observed across the world every year since 1886 commemorating the supreme sacrifice of the workers at Hay market, Chicago in the USA for eight-hour working day upholding the rights of the working class.
To mark the Day, District Administration brought out a colourful procession in the town led by Deputy Commissioner Dr. Shubash Chandra Biswas. Different Labour organization including Jatiya Sramik League, Trade union, Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sarmik Union and professional bodies took part in the procession.
After the rally a discussion meeting was held at local Shilpakala Academy with Additional Deputy Commissioner ANM Faizur Rahman in the chair. DC Dr Shubash Chandra Biswas addressed the discussion as chief guest while Police Super Amena Begum BPM addressed as special guest.
Deputy Chief Inspector, Department of National Industries labourers investigation, Mohammad Yousuf Ali presented the welcome speech.
BSS from Rangpur says: The historic May Day was observed here yesterday with a fresh call for making labourer-owner unity building a ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The district administration and Regional Directorate of Labour with different workers’, labourers’, traders’, professionals’, political, volunteers’ and human rights’ organisations observed the day through day-long colourful programmes.
The programmes included hoisting of the national, organisational and red flags, releasing balloons, bringing out colourful rallies, processions,human chains, serving improved diets to workers, discussions and colourful cultural functions in the city.
The city wore festive look as dozens of different organisations brought out colourful processions before gathering at the Central Shaheed Minar premises. The main discussion was arranged at Town Hall auditorium.
The district administration with Sramik League brought out the main rally chanting slogans in favour of the working people demanding safety and security at workplaces and establishing their socio-economic and human rights.
Jatiya Bidyut Sramik League, BADC Sramik Karmochari League, Jatiya Rickshaw Van Sramik League, District Motor Sramik Union, Sommilito Garments’Sramik Federation, Rupali Bank Sramik League, Sonali Bank Sramik League brought out processions.
Sommilito Garments’ Sramik Federation, Electronic Sramik Union, Truck and Tank Lorry Sramik League, Karmojibi Nari, District Electric Sramik Kallyan Samobai Samity, Krishi-Farm Sramik Federation, District Dokan Karmochari Union observed the day.
Different political parties including Awami League (AL), its associate bodies, Communist Party of Bangladesh, JASOD, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal,Ganatantry Party, Workers’ Party and trade organisations also observed the day.
The district administration with the Regional Directorate of Labour jointly organised the main discussion meeting at Town Hall auditorium with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Priyosindhu Talukder in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman attended the main discussion as the chief guest. ADC (Education and ICT) Ruhul Amin Mian, Additional Police Super Fazle Elahi, Deputy Inspector General of the Directorate of Labour and Employment Abdul Kaiyum and its Assistant Director Mohammad Akhteruzzaman, city AL President Shafiur Rahman Shafi, its General Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal,addressed as special guests.
BSS from Khulna reports: The historic May Day was observed here on Monday with a promise to ensure rights of workers in every sector across the country.
Different socio-cultural, trade union and political parties observed the day with befitting manner and enthusiasm.
To mark the day, Khulna Divisional Labour Office, Mill-Factory and Organization Inspection Office, Labour Welfare Center and Industry Relation Institution of Khulna (IRI) jointly organized a discussion meeting held at the Divisional Labour Office in the city.
Lawmaker of Khulna-2 constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan addressed the meeting as the chief guest while joint director of labour (JDL) Akhtar Hossain Khan was in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Nazmul Ahsan, Managing Director of F R Jute Mill Sharif Fazlur Rahman, Director of Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) Humayun Kabir, president of Khulna district unit Jatiya Sramik League B M Jafar, addressed as special guests.
Deputy Director of Labour of Khulna Md. Mizanur Rahman, delivered the welcome speech while Deputy Inspector General of Mill Factory and Organisation delivered the closing remarks.
Afterwards, a cultural function was held by Gangchil Shahittya Sanskriti Parishad.
Earlier, a colourful procession was begun led by the additional divisional commissioner (Revenue) Md. Faruk Hossain, from city’s New Market Area that paraded in Khulna-Dhaka highway and ended at the Labour Office.
Jatiya Sramik League Khulna city and district unit hoisted party flag at the party office, placed floral wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Muzibur Rahman, organized a colourful procession and a discussion meeting followed by cultural programme.
Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) organized a discussion meeting at the Humayun Kabir Balu auditorium at Khulna Press Club chaired by KUJ Senior Vice President Mallick Sudhanshu. The meeting was addressed, among others, by Wadudur Rahman Panna, Mokbul Hossain Mintu, Sheikh Abu Hassan, Shah Alam, Gaurango Nandi, Md. Saheb Ali, Amiya Kumar Paul, Subir Kumar Roy, Hedayet Hossain Molla, Shamsuzzaman Shaheen, Mostofa Zaman Poplu, Kaushik Dey and Debobroto Roy.Khulna district unit Trade Union Kendra, Construction Workers and other trade union brought out different colourful procession in the city in the morning while Jute Workers Institute of Khulna organized a discussion meeting in the afternoon that followed by a cultural function.

In observation of the day, district administration and Divisional office of the Labour Directorate jointly organized a post-rally discussion at Rajshahi Medical College Auditorium.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman addressed the discussion as chief guest with Aminul Haque, Joint Director of Department of Labour and Registrar of Trade Unions, in the chair. Deputy Commissioner Kazi Ashraf Uddin and Principal of Industries Related Institute Monirul Haque also spoke.
Terming the working class as the driving force of the national economy, the speakers said development of a nation is not possible without the development of condition of the working class.
They also laid emphasis on greater unity among the working people to establish their legal rights.
BSS from Gaibandha reports: The historic May Day was observed in the district on Monday with a fresh vow to establish the rights of working class and free them from exploitation and deprivation.
Marking the day, the district administration, Government Labour Welfare Centre (GLWC), political parties and different labour organizations chalked out the elaborate programmes.
The programmes included hoisting of national and organizational flags atop the offices of trade unions and labor organizations, wearing of badges, staging of dramas and cultural function.
In the morning, a huge colorful rally led by deputy commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad and superintendent of police (SP) M. Masrukur Rahman Khaled was brought out from in front of Independence Square and ended at the same venue after parading the main roads of the town.

The day is observed across the world every year since 1886 commemorating the supreme sacrifices of the workers at Hay Market, Chicago in the United States to establish the rights of eight-hour working day and uphold the rights of working class.
To mark the day, District administration arranged the programme and brought out a procession from DC office and paraded different roads of the town.
Different workers group, trade unions, socio-culture and professional organizations took part in the procession.
Deputy commissioner (DC) Amol Krishno Mandal, Police Super Gias Uddin Ahamed, Sadar upazila parishad chairman Anwar Sadat Samrat led the procession as chief and special guest respectively.
A discussion meeting was held on the occasion of May Day.
