The historic May Day was observed in different districts on Sunday with a fresh vow to establish the rights of working people through various progeammes. Our correspondents and agencies report:
Jhenaidah Correspondent reports: Historic May Day was observed in Jhenaidah on Sunday.
A rally was organised by Jhenidah district administration started from the old DC court premises led by Deputy Commissioner of Jhenidah Mahbub Alam Talukdar.
The rally was ended at Jhenaidah post office intersection. The rally was decorated with various types of demand banners, festoons, t-shirts and caps.
A discussion was also organised there.
Presided over by the deputy commissioner, Lawmaker, also the president of Jhenaidah District Awami League Abdul Hyee, Police Super Altaf Hossain, Zilla Parishad Administrator Abdul Wahed Jowardar and Jhenidah Municipality Mayor, also the general secretary of Jhenaidah District Awami League Saidul Karim Mintu were present as special guests.
Huge number of local people including various workers’ association leaders and activists, government and non-government organizations employees, social workers, various local elite, social representatives and journalists were present during the rally. bank cheques were distributed among the family members of death transport workers.
Sherpur Correspondent reports: The historic May Day was observed in a befitting manner in Sherpur district on Sunday.
A colourful rally brought out from in front of DC office at about 10 a.m. The rally paraded the main roads. Honorable whip of parliament house Md Atiur Rahman M.P led the rally.
Among others D.C A M Parvez Rahim, additional police super Md Abdul Warish, sadar upazila nirbahi officer Abul Kalam Azad, government and non-government officials, political leaders and leaders of labour organisations were also present there.
Jatiya Sramik Laegue , auto rickshaw Sramik League, hotel Sramik, Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Union, Jatiya Sramik Dal attended the rally.
Labour organizations organized discussion meeting, cultural programmes and many other functions on the occasion.
Similar programmes also organized in Jhenaigati, Srebardi, Nalitabari and Nakla upazila of the district.
Khulna Correspondent says: The historic May Day was observed here on Sunday with a vow to ensuring workers’ rights in every sector.
Different socio-cultural and political parties observed the day through various programmes.
To mark the day, Khulna Divisional Labour Office, Mill-Factory and Organization Inspection Office, Labour Welfare Center and Industrial Relations Institute (IRI) of Khulna jointly organised a discussion meeting at the Divisional Labour Office in the city.
Lawmaker of Khulna-2 constituency Mizanur Rahman Mizan addressed the meeting as the chief guest while joint director of labour (JDL) was in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Nazmul Ahsan, Managing Director of F R Jute Mills Md. Fazlur Rahman Sharif, Vice-President of Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) Sheikh Md. Abdul Baki, central vice-president of Jatiya Sramik League Motahar Uddin Sarder, president of Khulna district unit Jatiya Sramik League B M Jafar addressed the meeting as special guests.
Earlier, a colourful procession led by the Khulna divisional commissioner Md. Abdus Samad was brought out from city’s New Market Area.
Jatiya Sramik League Khulna city and district unit hoisted party flag at the party office, placed floral wreath at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, organized a colourful procession and a discussion meeting followed by a cultural programme.
Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) organized a discussion meeting at the Humayun Kabir Balu auditorium at Khulna Press Club. Chaired by KUJ President S M Zahid Hossain, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Wadudur Rahman Panna, Mokbul Hossain Mintu, Sheikh Abu Hassan, Shah Alam, Gaurango Nandi, Asaduzzaman Reaz, Md. Saheb Ali, Amiya Kumar Paul, Subir Kumar Roy, Hedayet Hossain Molla, Shamsuzzaman Shaheen, Mostofa Zaman Poplu, Kaushik Dey and Debobroto Roy.
Khulna District Unit Trade Union Kendra brought out a colourful procession in the city in the morning while Jute Workers Institute of Khulna organized a discussion meeting in the afternoon and it was followed by a cultural function.
BSS from Chuadanga reports: The historic May Day was observed here on Sunday in a befitting manner.
Chuadanga district administration chalked out elaborate programmes which included procession and discussion meeting.
The procession began from the local football ground participated by the workers of different organizations, NGO activists and leaders and activists of political parties including Awami League and Workers Party.
The rally paraded the main streets of the town carrying banners and placards which ended on the office premises of the local deputy commissioner where the discussion meeting held.
Saima Yunus, deputy commissioner, Chuadanga, was the chief guest and Obaidur Rahman Choudhury, mayor, Chuadanga pourashava was special guest. Anjuman Ara, additional deputy commissioner (general), Chuadanga presided over.
Local worker’s leaders Afzalul Hoque, M. Zenarel, Sirajul Islam and Islam Uddin also spoke on the occasion.
BSS from Gaibandha adds: The historic May Day was observed in the district on Sunday with a fresh vow to establish the rights of working people.
District administration, Government Labour Welfare Centre (GLWC), political parties and different trade unions chalked out elaborate programmes including discussion meetings, rallies and cultural functions marking the day.
The programmes included hoisting of national and organizational flags atop all the offices of trade unions and labor organizations.
In the morning, a big colorful procession led by deputy commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad and superintendent of police (SP) Ashraful Islam was brought out from in front of Independence Square and ended at the same venue after parading the main streets of the town.
Later, a discussion meeting organized by district administration and GLWC was held at the auditorium of Zila Shilpakala Academy of the town with additional deputy commissioner (General) M. Shamsul Azam in the chair.
DC M. Abdus Samad addressed the meeting as the chief guest and SP M.
Ashraful Islam, general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, district chapter Abu Bakar Siddique and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon were present as the special guests while assistant commissioner Musabbirul Islam was the moderator.
The meeting was also addressed, among others, by president of district bus sramik union Abdur Rashid, general secretary Advocate Goutam Chakrabarti Bishu, president of district truck sramik union Abdul Karim and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman.
The speakers urged the factory owners to issue the appointment letters for the workers and demanded of the government to introduce quota system so that the workers’ would get jobs.
DC M. Abdus Samad in his speech said the spirit of the May Day would
further strengthen the efforts of welfare of the workers to help get their just rights and materialize the dream of building middle income country by 2021 and developed one by 2041.
The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took welfare programmes including minimum wages for the workers of readymade garments. The DC said adding that National Child Labour Policy, 2010 and National Labour Policy, 2012 were formulated by the government.
A large number of workers and leaders attended the discussion.
