Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has unearthed a fresh loan scandal involving Tk18 crore at Farmers’ Bank.
The scam has been spotted in an investigation on the bank carried out by a BB inspection team.
According to BB investigation, the Board of Directors of the bank sanctioned Tk 17 crore loan to Crystal Fisheries Ltd in January last year for purchasing a trawler for Royal Deep Sea Fishing.
Royal Deep Sea Fishing, a concern of Crystal Fisheries Ltd which is owned by Bank’s director Murshed Murad Ibrahim.
A TV channel report last night also coroborrated the news.
The loan proposal was processed at the Bank’s Khatunganj Branch in Chittagong, but the concerned branch officials did not agree to process the loan fearing loss.
They said, there are eight reasons for which the proposal cannot be processed.
But interestingly, the head office of the bank sanctioned the loan without branche’s recommendation.
But no trawler was purchased with the loan amount of Tk 17 crore, instead it was illegally diverted to other account of Crystal Fisheries Ltd.
The outstanding now stands at Tk 18.10 crore with interest against Deep Sea Fishing which has no existence at reported address.
Farmers’ Bank, the newly established private commercial bank, recently came under the scanner of the central bank due to Tk 400 crore shady lending practices.
Earlier, the BB carried out special inspections into the bank’s Gulshan, Motijheel and Shyampur branches and found the irregularities in sanctioning loans.
Following the loan irregularities, BB appointed an observer to the bank for closely monitoring the activities of the new generation bank.
Former Cabinet Minister, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir is the Chairman of the Bank.
