Several Islamic parties are planning to launch fresh street movement in view of the bail granted to sacked minister and Awami League leader Abdul Latif Siddique. Sources said that some of the parties are planning to opt for hartal even in the month of Ramzan if Latif Siddiqui is released from the jail.
The High Court on Tuesday granted ad-interim bail to Latif Siddique in 10 cases filed in connection with hurting religious sentiment. The sacked minister might be released from the jail, as there is no arrest warrant against him in the remaining cases.
Latif Siddiqui at a programme in the USA on September 28 last year made disparaging remarks about Hajj, Prophet Muhammad (Sm) and the Tablig Jamaat. The Islamic parties have been demanding his capital punishment.
Warning that they would launch tougher movement if Latif Siddiqui is released from the jail, Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) accused the government of using the holy month to release atheist Latif Siddique. “The month of fasting gives lessons to forge strong resistance against enemies of Islam. We will be compelled to forge tougher movement even in Ramzan if needed,” said Mufti Faizullah, IOJ secretary general. He demanded capital punishment of Latif Siddique and enactment of the Blasphemy Law.
Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Sammilito Ulema-Mashayekh Parishad and some other Islamic parties and organisations also warned that they would go for tougher movement. “We won’t sit idle. If Latif Siddique is released, we will launch tougher movement, including hartal, even in Ramzan,” said Maulana Mujibur Rahman Hamidi of Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan.
Meanwhile, Advocate ANM Abed Raza, who filed a case against Latif Siddique in Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, on Wednesday told The New Nation that he would file a fresh case, as he is annoyed with the government for its role in this regard. “The government did not take any imitative. All the cases against Latif Siddique filed by the people. The government did not file any case. Even Attorney General or the government’s lawyers did not stand for the cases filed by others. It proves that the government has the ill-motive and it is favouring Latif Siddique. I will file a fresh case under Article 561-A in the CrPC, as Latif Siddique’s punishment is needed. He can’t be released,” he said.
