Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has again increased the power tariff for retail and bulk consumers by 5.3 per cent and 8.3 per cent per unit respectively.
The new tariff will come into effect from March.
BERC Chairman Md Abdul Jalil announced the new tariff at a press conference in his office in Dhaka on Thursday.
The energy regulator announced the hike after hosting a series of public hearings from November 28 to December 3 on the tariff hike proposals placed by the state-owned power companies.
“Considering the proposals from the power distribution companies, we decided to raise the power tariff by 5.3 per cent or Tk 0.36 at retail level, while 8.3 per cent or Tk 0.40 at wholesale level. This new tariff will come into effect from the billing month of March,” BERC chairman BERC Chairman Md Abdul Jalil said while announcing the hike.
Currently, per unit retail price of electricity is Tk 6.77. And now, it will increase by 5.3 per cent to Tk 7.13. Similarly, the bulk electricity tariff will go up by 8.3 per cent to Tk 5.17 from Tk 4.77.
This is the fifth power price hike at the retail level since the Awami League came to power in 2009. And the bulk price hike is the third one since then.
Power tariffs were hiked last on November 23, 2017. At that time, BERC on an average had raised the tariff by 5.3 per cent or Tk0.35 per unit at the retail level.
Bulk power consumers were exempted then. BERC last raised the power tariff for bulk consumers on September 1, 2015, by Tk0.23 per unit.
Back in March 1, 2010 the bulk power price was Tk2.5 per kilowatt hour (or a unit). Since then, the price has increased by 90 percent and the current average electricity price is Tk4.77kWh.
