Fresh flood may hit Sylhet region

Fresh flood may hit Sylhet and Sunamganj districts and some other parts of Sylhet division as light to moderate rain, thundershower and squally wind are being occurred in the region.
Water level is increasing rapidly in a number of rivers, including Surma, Kushiyara, Dhonu, Jadukata, Rokti and Cholti, and haors due to incessant rainfall and onrush of water from hilly areas.
Some rivers, including Surma and Kushiyara, are now flowing above the danger level in several points.
The water of Surma increased suddenly. The river was flowing 56 centimeters above the danger level at Kanaighat point under Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet. Low-lying areas are coming under water at Kanaighat, Zakiganj, Jaintapur and other upazilas in the district.
Some people of Zakiganj said that they fear such flood which hit the area last month. The water level in the river and the haor is increasing. Some people of Kanaighat and Jaintapur also said that flood in coming and low-lying areas are being inundated.
Ranjan Kumar Das, sub-divisional engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Sunamganj, said that the water level of Surma was flowing 48 centimeters above danger level at Shologhar point on Tuesday morning.
Around 38 mm rainfall was recorded in last 24 hours in Sunamganj, he added.
The WBD official said that floods might hit the area if the situation worsens further.
Earlier in June, thousands of people in Sylhet and Moulvibazar were marooned as severe flood hit the districts.
