The inhabitants of Sylhet district and city have been suffering extremely due to frequent power outage over the last few days.
Power outage hits the district town almost three to four hours everyday when the situation is more troubled in the rural areas. If immediate measures were not taken, things would be more troublesome with the start of Ramadan, locals apprehend.
Sources informed, all it happened as the Tk 250 million programme for power supply improvement in the district remained incomplete but had been shut, causing sufferings for the 125,000 people. The much talked about project was started with foreign aid in 2014 with a target to complete by June 2015 which got an extension by one year. But, even then the works remained incomplete and the project had to be shut.
The age-old power supply station at the district town was to be refurbished under the said project, but it didn’t happen.
Besides, even on moderate storm, the power supply has to be snapped due to the poor lines, weak transformers and other reasons.
When contacted, an official in the PDB however, said a new special project for the overall improvement of power supply system development has been started in the Sylhet Division. New distribution lines would be constructed from the Shahjibazar Grid Station to Habiganj electric supply station while the capacity of power substation would be raised to 40 MW from the existing 15 MW under the new project.
Besides, new transformers would be set up at places and worn-out distribution line and poles would be replaced, the official added.
Frequent load shedding paralysis normalcy in Chuadanga
Mizanul Haque Mizan from Chuadanga adds: Frequent power cut paralysed normal life of Chuadanga district areas as they cannot do their regular work.
Water supply has also dropped drastically due to the power crisis while other power- based activities are being stalled adding to the miseries of the town presidents.
The student of different of educational institutions, who have been preparing for their examinations, cannot concentrate on students well because of frequent load shedding.
The seven power outage has virtually paralysed life and economic activities of people already hit by price hike of people already hit by price hike of essential including rice.
Industrial units particularly in and around the district are worst victims of the power outage.
On an average, Chuadanga Sadar and three other neighboring upazilas had 12 hours of load- shedding during last month.
Patient of 3 upazilla hospital including Chuadanga Sadar Hospital are not getting water while using washroom. The doctor cannot do operation of emergency patient due to power crisis .
That is why there was loadshedding for 12 to 14 hours in the district, he added.
The worst ever load shedding ia causing a sharp decline in industrial see to for as well as immense sufferings to the city-dwellers, he continued.
