A three day-long free Thalassemia carrier screening test ended on Thursday at Jahangirnagar University (JU) conducted by the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department .
The programme was supervised by Professor Ibrahim Khalil of the department and funded by Ministry of Education.
Sample collection was started on Sunday at 10 a.m. by installing booth at the department’s laboratory. Around 300 students gave their sample
” I took the initiative under my recent research project to identify the silent careers of the disease and to give prescriptions so that a thalassemia-carrying couple may not birth to another patient” said professor Khalil.
“I will recommend to the university authority to make thalassemia test compulsory before admission and to conduct this free or with a minimum cost ” he added.
“The entire program was conducted by the current students of the department and the program gave students experience of internship” he added.
Hasibur Rahman ,a 3rd student student of Bangla department said ,”I am grateful and thankful to them for conducting such a costly test in free.”
