Four projects worth Tk 2,590 cr okayed

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved the ‘Enhancement of Capacity of Grid Substations and Transmission Line for Rural Electrification’ project costing Tk 1,332.68 crore to improve rural power supply system in five divisions.
The approval came from the ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that a total of four development projects involving Tk 2,590 crore were approved yesterday. “Of the total project costs, Tk 636.38 crore will come from the government exchequer, Tk 1,746 crore will come from project assistance while Tk 207 crore from the own funds of the (respective) organisation,”
State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan and Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam were present at the briefing.
Planning Ministry sources said that for the ‘Enhancement of Capacity of Grid Substations and Transmission Line for Rural Electrification’ project, the IDA of the World Bank will provide Tk 912.33 crore, the government to provide Tk 212.68 crore while the
remaining Tl 207.67 crore will come from the own fund of the organisation.
Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited (PGCB) will implement the project in the rural areas of Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur Divisions. The project is expected to be completed by December 2017.
Under the project, some 108.5 kilometer new transmission lines will be set up while 280 kilometer transmission lines would be renovated alongside setting up of six sub-stations.
The day’s ECNEC meeting also approved ‘Skills for Employment Investment Program (SELP) Phase-1, project (Tk 1,050.56 crore). Of the total project cost, the ADB will provide Tk 780 crore as loan, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) will provide Tk 53.59 crore as grant while the government will provide Tk 217 crore.
The Planning Minister said that under the Project, some 2.60 lakh people would be imparted training on skills development on six priority sectors such as RMG, construction, ICT, light engineering, leather, and ship building.
