The Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka yesterday (Wednesday) sentenced four persons to life term imprisonment for killing a college student of Madaripur in 2013.
Judge Monir Kamal of the court passed the order on Wednesday. The convicts are- Lenin Bepari and Rezaul Bepari of Dhusha village in Kalkini upazila, Shahbuddin Darji of Kukuril village and MM Faisal Ahmed Thantoli village. Of the convicts, Rezaul is at large. The court also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each in default they would suffer six months more in the prison. Other accused
Mohiuddin Darji was acquitted. According to the case statement, Wahiduzzaman, son of Mozammel Hossain of Singair upazila married a woman named Tithi, but convicted Rezaul had love affairs with that woman. Meanwhile, Wahiduzzaman gave Rezaul Tk 10 to go to Italy. As he could not go abroad, Wahiduzzaman asked convict Rezaul to return his money and that finally led to an altercation. Later, agitated Rezaul and Mohiduddin decided to kill Wahiduzzaman instead of returning his money.
According to their conspiracy, Shahabuddin, Lelin and Selim asked Wahiduzzaman to go to Savar to take back his money on March 6, 2013. As soon as the victim reached Savar, the convicts took him in a maize field in Singair of Manikganj and strangulated him. According to the chargesheet of the case- Lelin, Shahabuddin, Selim and Faisal were directly involved in the murder. Accused Selim died during the trial proceedings.
Sub-Inspector Salam of Singair Police Station filed the murder case over the incident. Later, Detective Branch Inspector Madon Mohon pressed charges in the court against six persons on November 22, 2014. The court framed charge against the six accused on November 27, 2016. The court recorded the depositions of 22 witnesses to give the verdict.
Victim Wahiduzzaman was a student at Madaripur Government Nazimuddin University College and a part-time employee of The Hunger Project, an international voluntary organisation.
