Four police personnel, including Bandarbazar Police Outpost in-charge SI Akbar Hossain Bhuyian, have been suspended while three others withdrawn from the outpost following the death of Rayhan Ahmed allegedly in police custody in Sylhet.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) deputy commissioner Ajbahar Ali confirmed the matter on Monday.
Three other suspended police personnel are assistant sub-inspector Towhid Miah and constables Titu Chandra Das, and Harun-ur-Rashid. Those withdrawn are assistant sub-inspectors Ashiq Elahi, Kutub Ali and constable Sajib Hossain.
“The order was given at about 3.30pm based on initial investigation,” said deputy commissioner Ajbahar.
Rayhan Ahmed, 34, a resident of Akhalia in Sylhet city, allegedly died in police custody on Sunday morning.
Victim’s family claimed that Rayhan was beaten to death in police custody while police denied the allegation and said angry mob beat Rayhan to death suspecting him as a robber.
The victim’s mother said Rayhan had called her from an unknown number at 4: 23am and said that police has took him to Bandarbazar Police Outpost and are demanding Tk 10,000 for his release.
Rayhan’s uncle rushed to the police station with Tk 5,000 to free him. But, police men rejected to take the amount and asked him to come in the morning after arranging Tk 10,000.
As Rayhan’s uncle went to Bandarbazar police outpost at 9am, he was informed that his nephew fell sick and was taken to hospital at 7 am. After rushing to hospital he came to know that Rayhan was already dead and his body sent for post-mortem.
Rayhan’s uncle alleged, “Police tortured Rayhan to death. His body bore several wound marks.”
Meanwhile, police earlier said Rayhan was caught by locals of Kastghar area during a robbery and was lynched by mob.
