Four accused killed in Meherpur `gunfigh`

Four persons were killed in a gunfight with police in Meherpur Sadar Upazila early Tuesday.
They were identified as Saddam Hossain, 25, Ramesh, 24, Sohag, 27, and Kanon, 25, from Sonapur village under Pirojpur Union of the Upazila, police said.
Abdullah Al Mahmud, Additional Superintendent of Police, Meherpur, said, “A team of police chased a gang of criminals at Nurpur intersection at about 2:30am. At one stage, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers, triggering the gunfight, leaving four of them dead on the spot.”
Besides, six policemen, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ahsan Habib, were injured in the incident, the police official said.
Police claimed that a double murder case was pending against them.
 “Police brought the four bullet-ridden accused in the hospital around 3:45am after death,” said Doctor Abu Ehsan Raju of Meherpur Sadar Hospital.
The injured cops received first aid, he said.
