The fourth founding anniversary of the River Police will be observed today.
“We are going to observe the fourth anniversary of River Police today. The unit was raised on November 12 in 2013 aimed at ensuring security for the passengers of naval routes,” River Police chief Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police, Sheikh Mohammad Maruf Hasan said while talking to medi at his Mirpur office.
A function will be held at the Convention Hall of Police Staff College at Mirpur-14 marking the 4th founding anniversary of the River Police. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan is expected to be present there as the chief guest.
“The government has taken initiatives to establish thanas (police stations) and camps of river police in all the 64 districts with a view to strengthening security of the naval routes,” DIG Maruf said, adding that a total 11 naval police stations and 62 camps are now in operation.
“We have been working relentlessly since its inception to ensure security as well as curb crimes and recover (illegally occupied) properties with limited manpower and logistic supports,” he added.
Referring to the success in last four years, he said, “We have already arrested 5,550 criminals and lodged 1,882 cases in connection with rescuing 57 victims of kidnapping, seizure of a huge number of firearms, contraband drugs and current nets.”
The naval police started functioning with 2,474 manpower including one DIG, two additional DIGs, six police supers, 10 additional police supers, 10 assistant police supers, 61 inspectors, 154 sub-inspectors, 265 assistant sub-inspectors, 96 nayeks and 562 constables, Senior Assistant Police Super Farida Parvin told.
