The 65th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Awami League will be celebrated today (Monday) in a befitting manner.
To mark the day, Awami League (AL) has chalked out elaborate programmes that include hoisting of national and party flags atop party offices across the country after sunrise and laying of wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in city’s Dhanmondi at 7am.
Besides, the national and party flags will also be hoisted at Bangabandhu Bhaban at 7:15 am when national anthem will be
played and white pigeons and balloons will be released in the sky marking the day.
In observance of its 64th founding anniversary, AL will bring out a colourful mass procession from the foot of Shikha Chirantan (Eternal Flame) at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan at 3:30pm.
A discussion will be held at the city’s Bangabandhu International Conference Centre with Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on June 28.
The associate bodies of the party like Bangladesh Awami League, Jubo League have chalked out different programmes.
In a message on the eve of the day Awami League President and the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her party has been working relentlessly to transform Bangladesh into a welfare state.
She called upon the people to remain cautious against the evil design of the vested quarters active against the independence and welfare of the people and the democracy in the country.
Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam in another massage called upon the leaders and activists of all levels to celebrate the day in a befitting manner. He also asked them to take part all the programmes across the country.
The traditional and oldest political party was established on June 23 in 1949. Later, the party became popular and led the Independence War in 1971.
After the independence in 1971, AL formed the government. The first general election in Independent Bangladesh was held in 1973 with Awami League bagging most of the seats and forming the government.
Awami League later played a vital role in the anti-Ershad movement for nine years. Awami League became the main opposition in Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) in the national elections held in 1991.
In 1996, Awami League after winning the general election formed the government and ran the state affairs for five years.
In 2008, Awami League again achieved a landslide victory in the parliamentary election bagging 232 out of 299 seats in the Jatiya Sangsad.
In 2014, Awami League formed government through 10th parliamentary election, which was held on January 5.
