After high drama, former South African president Jacob Zuma was taken into custody on Wednesday for serving a 15-month jail term after he was found guilty of contempt for not appearing before a commission investigating corruption accusations against him between 2009 and 2018.

He voluntarily surrendered to prison officials 40 minutes before a midnight deadline ended. Zuma, 79, a freedom fighter hero who combated the apartheid rule alongside Nelson Mandela, was awarded sentence last month by the highest judicial body – the Constitutional Court.

It should be a glorious achievement for freedom loving people of South Africa. Mr Zuma was a genuine freedom fighter along with his people. His contribution to the development of country will be appreciated.

But hunger for power and vanity as freedom fighter lost his sense of propriety and he used corruption for continuing in power and treated himself like a king. He is facing corruption allegations. But not yet found guilty. His arrest and serving jail sentence for violation of Anti-Corruption Commission’s order to appear has landed him to jail. This is called the rule of law.

Our educated people have no courage or gutsy to make us live in freedom with dignity. Our enemies to freedom is our job seeking gutless educated sections of our people holding public positions for serving masters and doing disservice to the people.
