Former President of Sri Lanka calls on Speaker

Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunga, former President of Sri Lanka, on Monday called on Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her office here.
During the meeting, they discussed bilateral interests between the two countries, said an official press release.
Issues like women empowerment, women education, culture, parliamentary process, gender parity and socio-economic status of the two countries also came up in the discussion.
Shirin Sharmin, also Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), said Bangladesh is the country of peace and harmony.
“People of all religions traditionally live here peacefully for long although majority people of the country are Muslim,” she added.
Kumaratunga recalled the memories when she was in power of Sri Lanka and highlighted various development programmes taken at that time. She hoped that the friendly relations between the two countries would be strengthened further.
Senior secretary at the parliament secretariat Dr Abdur Rob Hawlader was also present, the release added.
