The first death anniversary of former three times mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury was observed in the city on Saturday with paying glowing tributes to the legendary politician who contributed his whole life for the well-being of the toiling masses.
The successful mayor of Chattogram City Corporation for 17th years and President of Chattogram city Awami League Mohiuddin Chowdhury died at the age of 74 on this day last year.
The death anniversary of Chattol Bir Mohiuddin Chowdhury was observed through a day-long programme which began with placing of wreath at his grave by AL.
Party leaders and activists including City Unit Acting President Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury and General Secretary and city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, MA Latif, MP, Chattogram Development Authority Chairman Abdus Salam, Chattogram Jillaparisad Administrator M A Salam and late Mohiuddin eldest son and AL Organizing Secretary Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel were present there.
Khatme Quarn, Milad Mahfil and wearing of black badges were highlights of the death anniversary programme.
Later, a memorial meeting was held at GEC convention center where Chattogram city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin was present as chief the guest.
The mayor said Mohiuddin Chowdhury did politics for the welfare of the common masses. “We have many things to be learned from his life and works,” Nasir said.
Washika Ayesha Khan, MP, urged the people to remain united to vote for the party again in the next general elections to strengthen the hands of Sheikh Hasina for development and progress of the country.
Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury said late mayor turned himself a great politician from the grassroots. Mohiuddin raised his voice after assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members in 1975, Mahtab added.
The meeting was addressed, among others, by AL leaders Noyom Uddin Chowdhury, Advocate Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury Babul, Advocate Sunil Sarker, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury Bachcu, Khurshed Alam Sujon, Advocate Iftaker Hossain Chowdhury and Mohiuddin eldest Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel.
Earlier, Chattogram Press Club published a memoir titled ‘Journalist Friendly ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury’ on December 6 marking his first death anniversary.
