Staff Reporter :Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) Professor Moniruzzaman Miah died on Monday at the age of 81.Moniruzzaman Miah, who had long been suffering from old-age complications, breathed his last at Square Hospital about 12 noon. He was admitted to the hospital on Sunday night as his condition sharply deteriorated.His body has been kept at the hospital mortuary.His first Namaz-e-Janaza will be held in front of Geography and Environment Department on the DU campus at 11am. The second Namaz-e-Janaza will be held on the premises of DU Central Mosque after Zohr prayer. He will be buried at Banani graveyard, M Asaduzzaman, brother of Moniruzzaman Miah told the media. A confirmed bachelor Moniruzzaman Miah served as the DU Vice-Chancellor between 1990 and 1992. On October 31, 1992 he was made ambassador to Senegal.Born in 1935, Miah studied at the Rajshahi University before starting his teaching career at the Jagannath College (now university) in Dhaka.In 1961, he went to France for higher studies. Five years later, he joined as a teacher at Dhaka University’s Geography Department. BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir offered condolences for the deceased, who was a pro-BNP intellectual.
