Hundreds of people of seven unions under Barishal Sadar and Bakerganj Upazilas formed a human chain and held agitation rally in front Ashwini Kumar Hall and procession on city roads demanding formation of a new upazila on eastern bank of Kirtankhola River named `Chandradwip’ under Barishal district on Wednesday noon.
Munwarul Islam Oli, convener of ` Chandradwip Upazila Bastobayon Sangram Comittee’ and member of district council, presided over the programme and among others Manik Mridha, Faridul Alam Jahangir, Ansar Ali Haoladar, Mizanur Rahman Selim, Isail Pandit, Asadul Islam Asad, Sadeka Afzal, Zillur Rahman, Obaidur Rahman Masum .
They demanded of the government to form the new upazila consisting of four unions named Charkawa, Chanpura, Tungibaria and Chandramohon of Barishal Sadar upazila and three unions named Charamoddi, Charadi and Darial unions of Bakerganj upazila.
The speakers said, the aforesaid seven unions of the two upazilas consisting more than 1.5 lakhs population were deprived from development and communications facilities, so we demanding formation of new upazila named ` Chandradwip’, the historical identity of the region.
They said during the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Babrishal, this demand was placed before her and later under direction of ministries of public administration, planning and finance, local government ministry preparing a proposal with sketch map of the proposed upazila and its infrastructures sent to the concerned ministries.
