Form expert body to survey vehicle fitness : HC

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday directed the authorities concerned to form a 15 member National Neutral Expert Committee to conduct a survey of the internal and external fitness of the vehicles to prevent accident.
The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order and issued a rule after hearing a writ petition filed as public interest litigation.
Home Secretary, Road Transport and Bridges Secretary and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman have been asked to submit the survey report of the committee within three months.Advocate Tanveer Ahmed, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the writ petition with the HC last week. The lawyer himself took part in the hearing.
After court order, Tanveer told the reporters that the HC wanted to know in the rule as to why the respondents should not be directed to seize all the vehicles sans fitness certificates from roads.
In the rule, the HC asked also as to why the respondents’ inaction to ensure and supervision of the vehicles’ fitness should not be declared illegal.
Home Secretary, Road Transport and Bridges Secretary and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman, Director of Bangladesh Road Safety Division, Director of BRTA Enforcement Department and Inspector General of Police were asked to comply with the rule within four weeks.
