Forging social resistance against child marriage and all sorts of violence against children has become an urgent need for facilitating them to flourish latent talent besides building them as worthy citizens, speakers at a discussion here mentioned.
They viewed all of us should raise voice and work together to address the social problem collectively as only the government or any other single organization cannot do anything in this regard.
Association for Community Development (ACD) organised the discussion titled “Creating awareness about Child Marriage to end Violence against Children” held at Durgapur Upazila Resource Center of the district recently.
Joint Secretary of Women and Children Affairs Ministry Dr Aminul Islam addressed the discussion as chief guest with Salima Sarwar, Executive Director of ACD, in the chair.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Akhtarun Nahar, District Children Affairs Officer Mosharraf Hossain Prodhan, Upazila Women Affairs Officer Khondakar Makmam Mahmuda, Social Service Officer Asaduzaman Officer and Rural Development Officer Habibur Rahman also spoke.
Terming the child marriage as the major violence and gross violation of human rights Chief Guest Dr Aminul Islam said there is no alternative to check it substantially. Despite multifarious interventions by the government and non-government organizations concerned, the child marriage is taking place. In this situation, the community people and mass-media should come forward positively,
He said unemployment, intrusion of foreign culture and weak family bondage were triggering various unexpected incidents like sexual harassment.
“We need to establish social networks and alliances involving government and non-government organizations, community people, civil society and media to reach this goal,” said Dr Amin.
Salima sarwar said early marriage and the early pregnancy in particular have been posing a serious threat to the family planning activities, especially in the rural areas.
She stated that utmost importance should be given to addressing the menace of early marriage of children. Otherwise, the family planning activities will go in vain. Apart from this, the violence against women couldn’t be reduced to a greater extent.
