A suspected member of a forest robber gang was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Katakhali area under Chandpai Range of the Sundarbans East Zone in Rampal upazila on Wednesday evening. The deceased was identified as Kamrul Sheikh, 35.
Based on information that members of a pirate gang, ‘Farhad Bahini’, were staying in the area, a team of the elite force carried out a drive in Katakhali, said Major Adnan Kabir of Rab-8.
Sensing the presence of the Rab personnel, members of the gang, numbering 10-15, opened fire on them, forcing the
Rab members to retaliate that triggered a gunfight around 7:35pm, he said.
Several gunshots were traded between the pirate gang and the Rab members during the 10-15 minute gun battle, he said.
Kamrul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, Adnan said, adding that other members of the gang managed to flee the spot.
The Rab team also recovered 10 local and foreign firearms and 60 bullets from the spot.
