Forest guard killed during eviction drive

A forest guard was beaten to death and three others were injured by some miscreants while evicting illegal establishments from government forest area at Bhujpur in Fatikchhari Upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, 50, a guard of Forest Department of Chattogram North.
Narayan Range officer (North Chattorgram) Md Rezaul Karim said some people were building a concrete house in the reserved forest area under Hasnabad beat.
When the forest officials conducted a drive to evict the illegal house, its owner Nazrul Mia and his accomplices obstructed them, he said.
At one stage, some miscreants, led by Nazrul, swooped on the forest officials and beat them up with sticks indiscriminately, leaving Salam dead on the spot.
The injured forest guards –Sadek, Abul Kalam and Md Mamun –were admitted to a local hospital. Among them, the condition of Sadek was stated to be critical.
Contacted, house owner Nazrul dismissed the allegation and said Forest Department officer of Bhujpur zone Atiqullah demanded Tk 50,000 from him while he was expanding the veranda of his old house.
He claimed that he paid Tk 15,000 to Atiq but the forest department officials came to evict his house as he failed to pay the rest of the money.
Officer-in-charge of Bhuzpur Police Station Md Bais Alam said anyone who is involved in the incident will not be spared.
