In a bid to woo the foreign investors, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority said on Sunday it would organise an international investment summit in Dhaka in November.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the two-day International Investment Summit, scheduled on November 28-29 at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden in Dhaka.
“We were working to host an international summit to woo investment but due to the Covid-19 pandemic it was delayed,” BIDA Executive Chairman Md Sirazul Islam told.
“Prime Minister has given her consent to inaugurate the summit on November 28 as chief guest,” he added.
Different multinational companies and individuals would be invited to the summit, where Bangladesh would present the opportunities it was offering to the foreign investors, said the BIDA chairman.
BIDA has already invited investors from some 10 countries, including India, Japan, South Korea, China, and some European nations to the investment summit.
According to BIDA, there will be 14 technical sessions to present the business prospects of 14 promising sectors, including leather, pharmaceuticals, Active Pharmaceuticals Ingredients (API), Light Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Automobile industry and plastic.
Beyond the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA), Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority will hold a separate session to lure investors by presenting the facilities they are offering to the investors.
On top of that, there will be also a business to business (B2B) session to encourage joint investment.
According to Bangladesh Bank data, the net inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) stood at $592 million, up by 1.64 per cent in the first quarter of 2021, compared to $582.17 million in 2020.
However, FDI inflow in Bangladesh declined by 10.80 per cent to $2.56 billion in 2020 as the global investment was hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
