Footpath vendors at the capital’s Motijheel, Gulistan and Baitul Mukarram areas are dejected over lack of sales barely a week ahead of Eid.
For the drop in their fortune, they blame mushrooming of clothing outlets in different neighbourhoods.
But on Saturday, many people were seen crowding around these makeshift stalls on the footpaths to do Eid shopping.
The outfits of numerous colours and designs were available at these outlets like that of the high-end shopping malls.
The vendors were however not satisfied with the footfalls. They claimed the volume of sale was much less than before.
“In compare to earlier Eids, sale this time is much less. On an average this year I am selling products worth Tk 10,000 to 12,000 everyday as against Tk 30,000 to 40,000 I used to sale in the previous seasons,” Abu Bakar Siddiq, a children wear seller, who hawk his products in front of Gulistan Shopping Complex at Fulbarhia, said.
Similar was the reaction of ‘Mannan’, who regularly hawks in front of Fulbarhia Shopping Complex.
“The customers are coming, the sales are good but we can’t meet the targets.”
At the footpath shops, three-piece women’s suits are sold at the price range of Tk 250 and 700, children’s wear between Tk 150 and 300, punjabi from Tk 200 to 300.
Men’s shirt and trouser cost Tk 120 and Tk 300 respectively.
“You can get punjabis of good quality here like the big markets but at a much cheaper price,” Shah Alam, who puts up a stall on the footpath of Baitul Mukarram area, said.
He said the sales were increasing every day.
Shopping at the footpath stalls entails hassles of ‘bargaining.’ But a good number of shops at these places are now selling clothes at a fixed price.
Shirt trader ‘Sumon’ said they never lacked crowd being in the commercial area.
“Ours is a fixed-price shop. Top officials of different institutions buy from here,” he said.
In front of ‘Sumon’s shop, bdnews24.com talked to a private company employee Mirajul Islam.
He said he regularly purchase shirts from these footpaths due to the low price.
At Gulistan, ‘Ratna’, who came to buy Eid dress for her child, said, “One shouldn’t look down upon the footpath shops. Good products are available here at a cheap rate.”
