Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken foolproof security in and around the Ekushey Book Fair venue and its adjacent areas to hold smoothly the monthlong fair-2018.
“We have taken stringent security measures centering the Bangla Academy, Doyel Chattar, Shishu Academy, TSC and its adjoining areas likewise the previous years and the arrangement will continue till the fair ends,” DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah told the reporters on Sunday afternoon after paying visit to the spot to see the overall security arrangements for the book fair.
The venues of the book fair – Bangla Academy and Suhrawardy Udyan-have already been swiped by the dog squads and bomb disposal unit as part of the security arrangement, the DMP chief said.
“A large number of police will be deployed in and outside the book fair,” he said, adding that plain-clothed police personnel will guard the venues round the clock, while the squads of SWAT, bomb disposal unit and dog squad will be present there to meet emergencies. Special security has been arranged for writers, bogglers and publisher, he further said.
A total of 200 CC cameras and nine watch towers have been set up at the fair venue from where security personnel will observe the fair activities with binoculars.
Earlier, US-American writer and blogger Avijit Roy was hacked by assassins near the book fair premises and his wife was also injured in the attack. Three other bloggers and a publisher were also hacked to death later allegedly by the assassins, raising concern about the security of the writers and bloggers.
