Food safety for people to be ensured

Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam, MP, in Rajshahi on Wednesday said the government will ensure food safety for the people.
“Food safety is people’s constitutional right and the present government wants to guarantee this right,” he said as chief guest at the inaugural session of a divisional level workshop in the city.
Commissioner’s Office of Rajshahi division organized the workshop titled “Safe Food: Social Movement in Preventing Adulteration and Contamination of Food” at Nanking Darbar Hall.
Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) supported the workshop. President of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food Ministry Abdul Wadud Dara, MP,and BSFA Chairman Mahfuzul Haque also spoke with Commissioner of Rajshahi division Abdul Hannan in the chair. BFSA Secretary Abdul Baten Miah welcomed the participants.
Food Minister said, at present 201 food inspectors have been appointed and safe food courts set up in 64 districts, including metropolitan cities. The government has given recognition to 10 laboratories for testing food, he said, adding that the Safe Food Authority will set up its own laboratories soon. He warned that none of those involved with food adulteration would be spared.
Minister Quamrul Islam stressed the need for creating mass awareness over safe food for implementing the Food Safety Act, 2013.
BFSA Chairman Mahfuzul Haque said it is possible to supply safe food from food producing field to dining table through implementing Food Safety Act 2013. He added the government is very sincere for proper enforcement of the Consumers’ Rights Protection Law to protect the consumers’ rights and public health.
Earlier, a rally was brought out from Government Laboratory School premises to create public awareness on consumers’ rights. The rally was ended at the meeting venue after parading the city streets.
