Food aid distributed among 8,000 fisherman families in Manikganj

The government has completed to distribute food assistance among the fishermen families under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme for the banning periods of hilsha fishing in the three
upazilas of the district.
Under the programme, a total of 8,000 fishermen families of the Padma and Jamuna river side residents of Harirampur, Shibalaya and Daulatpur upazilas of the district are getting 20 kgs of rice as food assistance for each of the families.
District Fishery Officer Saifur Rahman said the VGF rice is being continued to distribute among the listed families. District administrations distributing the food aid to reduce the sufferings of fishermen during the banning periods.
The government already declared banning of hilsha fishing from October 4 to October 25.
Fishery Department seizes 15 kgs of hilsha, 5,000 miters net in Manikganj : The Department of Fisheries has been continuing the drive on the different points of the Padma and Jamuna River to protect the mother hilsha.
District Fishery Officer Sayfur Rahman said a total of 66 special drives and seven mobile courts were conducted in different points of Harirampur, Shibalaya and Daulatpur areas in the district so far, from the beginning of the ban on catching hilsha fish.
DFO said a total of 15 kgs of hilsha were seized in the district and 5,000 meter of current net including three fishing boats were destroyed at a cost of Taka 3.44 lakh during the drives. Taka one thousand realized as fine from a fisherman for violating the government imposed rule.
The government already distributed 160 tonnes of rice under VGF programme among 8000 fishermen families in the three upazilas of the district as the food assistance to reduce their sufferings during the banning period, the sources added.
