Citing the incident of using bamboo sticks instead of iron rod in the construction of a building in Chuadnaga recently, President Abdul Hamid on Saturday urged engineers to follow the ‘code of ethics’ while discharging their duties.
“The expansion of communication and infrastructure is indispensible for the development of a country. A large portion of our ADP (Annual Development Programme) is allocated for these sectors. Engineers will have to play a role in ensuring the quality of all projects,” he said.
The President said this while addressing the inaugural session of the 68th founding anniversary of the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) at its auditorium in the city.
Abdul Hamid said it is unfortunate but true that nowadays reports are often being published in newspapers about flaws in construction works and their low quality, especially in the works of road and building constructions.
“Even we have come to know the use of bamboo instead of iron rod. There was the wastage of public money, on one hand, and public sufferings on the other hand. Besides, your (engineers) image has been tarnished due to some dishonest men,” he added.
“Our image is also being tarnished both at home and abroad. But, there’ll be no debate if our engineers can invent the technology where bamboo is stronger than iron rod,” he said.
On April 7, the authorities concerned shut the construction work of Plant Quarantine Wing building of a building of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Darshana upazila of Chuadanga following an allegation that the construction was being done with bamboo sticks as an alternative to iron rod.
The President asked the engineers to be conscious to ensure the highest use of public money as not only any single person or organisation but also the country is affected if there is any deviation of ethics.
President of IEB Engineer Md Kabir Ahmed Bhuiyan and general secretary Engineer Md Abdus Sabur, among others, spoke on the occasion.
