Md Maiz Uddin :
The word ‘Folklore’ derives from ‘folk,’ which means rural culture and literature. It refers to songs, tales and riddles etc of a race. Our national folk songs have got its reputation throughout the world community by virtue of its quality and standard. This land time to time was invaded and occupied by different rulers of the world. Mongal, Arya, Dravid and lastly the British being attracted by its scenic beauty and natural resources became the administration though got entrance in the guise of traders. In 1757, British Empire was constituted after defeating Nowab Seraj-ud-Doula at the battle of Plassey on June 23, which rested its effect up to 1947. People of our land was inhumanely exploited and tortured in all respects for which a great and historical, Sepoy Revolution in 1857 was breaded Lastly Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi. Quaid-e-Azam, Sabash Bose, Sir Syet Ahmed and others rendered their talent and patriotic view for the freedom of the land. The then Indo-Pak was administered by the British people for a long period of about 175 years.
Folklore is nothing but the part of literature. And literature is in a sense, the mirror of the society. It expresses the culture and heritage of a society and nation. It contains the distinguishing features of a race. Manners and behaviours, Customs and costumes, the wedding ceremony, ritual and funeral rites etc are reflected in literature. Folklore is therefore the main element of ethnological tradition of a country. Because ethnology and folklore are the inseparable part of literature. Ours is a country of scenic beauty for which time to time it was invaded and administrated by different rulers of the world. As a result, cultural affairs have also been mingled with others. All sorts of cultures like Muslimism, Hinduism, Buddhism and alienated one have occupied ours own.
Culture and heritage unfolds human behaviours acquired through experience. According to anthropology, every man has a culture of his own. One becomes an individual of culture by didn’t of one’s personal efforts. On the other hand archaeology is it find out the study of ancient matters of a bygone age.
Our days in the society were passing in a happy and peaceful environment. But this day, we are in a tense moment. In the past time, people were rather in a harmonious task. Folk songs, jatra, baul-song and other social and cultural programmes were the main amusement and attraction of our countrymen. But these simple enthusiastic and attractive programmes are far beyond our expectation. Jatrapala, Krishnalila, Jarigan, Kobigaan etc were the recreational and entertaining display for the rural people of our country. These were the traditional programmes held everywhere in our land.
Boishakhi Mela, Ostamisnan (ritual bath), bull fights, dual fight etc, are never to be forgotten. But alas! all these traditional events have already been out sighted. In the winter night we used to enjoy Jatrapala ignoring biting cold in an opera. With pity it is to be said such kind of cultural and entraining events have been banned by the relevant authority, which is to be revived again.
