Folk fantasy, action film star Wasim passes away

Popular Dhallywood actor Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, popularly known as Superstar Wasim, breathed his last at
a city hospital around 12:40am on Sunday. He was 74. The legendary actor had been suffering from multiple old-age complications. He was also suffering with kidney and lungs issues as well as high blood pressure and eye problems. The actor was taken to a hospital as his condition deteriorated on Saturday night where the physician declared him dead at around 12:40am. He was buried at Banani graveyard after Zuhr prayer at Gulshan’s Azad Mosque yesterday.
After completed masters in History from University of Dhaka in 1970, Wasim got call from the film arena. He started his career in 1972 as an assistant director in movie Chhondo Hariye Gelo directed by renowned filmmaker SM Shafi. He also played
a small role in that film. He later made his acting debut in 1974 with the film Raater Por Din. He was one
of the top heroes in folk fantasy and action films during the 70s and 80s. Director Mohsin gave his name Wasim. He had co-starred with Sohel Rana in acclaimed Dost Dushmon,
an unofficial remake of Sholay
by Ramesh Sippy.
Hailed from Chandpur, Wasim’s family was living in old Dhaka. Wasim acted in scores of hit films, including The Rain, Daku Monsur, Jighangsa, Ke Asol Ke Nokol, Bahadur, Dost Dushmon, Manosi, Dui Rajkumar, Saudagar, Norom Gorom and Iman. Basically in 1976, Wasim featured in The Rain directed by SM Shafi which brought him much fame. He acted in more than 150 films from 1973 to 1990 including Bahadur, Lutera, Lal Memsaheb, Raj Dulali. Wasim has stayed away from limelight
for a long time before death.
Wasim’s birthday is March 23. His only son Fardun is a barrister. Late director Momtaz Uddin was assistant of Mumbai’s Raj Kapoor. He made Wasim-starrer his second movie Ke Asol Ke Nokol against Bobita.
