Badrul Ahsan :At least 16 people have been killed and some other missing in a number of accidents both in road and water ways in different parts of the country following thick fog yesterday (Tuesday).According to our district correspondents, ten people were killed and seven others injured in five separate road accidents in Comilla, Sirajganj, Mymensingh, Kushtia and Dhaka on the day. Besides, at least six people went missing as a trawler packed with over 60 passengers capsized in the Meghna River in Haimchar upazila after being hit by a goods-laden vessel amid dense fog on Tuesday morning.Among the deceased, four people – three are members of a family and their domestic help — were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a private car at Tamta in Daudkandi upazila in Comilla early Tuesday.In another accident, in Sirajganj, three members of a family were killed when a truck ploughed through their house in Dwariarpur Municipality of Shahjadpur upazila on early Tuesday. Besides, one pedestrian in Kushtia and a woman in Savar were killed in separate road accidents early morning of the day due to dense fog, according to police sources.Meanwhile, another six people went missing as a trawler packed with over 60 passengers capsized in the Meghna River in Haimchar upazila after being hit by a goods-laden vessel amid fog on Tuesday morning.Safaruddin, Sub-Inspector of Haimchar Police Station, said the victims include two women and four children.According to the police stations of different districts, more than 70 people were injured in the accidents both in roads and water ways. However, ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia and Shimulia- Kawrakandi routes resumed after several hours of suspension for dense fog on Tuesday.Mahiuddin Russel, Manager of BIWTA’s Aricha station, said suddenly the area was enveloped in thick fog, forcing them to suspend ferry service on the Paturia-Daulatdia route at about 5am. The ferry service had been kept suspended on the route from 5am to 9am, he said.Thirteen ferries remained stranded at Paturia and Daulatdia ghats for the foggy weather. Besides, two ferries Khan Jahan Ali and Bonolota stayed motionless in the mid-river due to poor visibility caused by the fog, he said.About 200 vehicles, including buses, trucks and cars, remained stranded at both ends of the important route.However, the ferry service resumed around 9:15 am as fog started disappearing with the sunrise.
