Incessant rain worsened the overall flood situation in low lying 325 villages of five upazilas in Gopalganj.
Fresh areas were flooded as 114 beels in the district have swelled until Sunday morning and aggravated the condition of 20,339 marooned families, according to sources from the Water Development Board (WDB) and the district administration.
Currently 1,165 families have taken shelters in 120 shelter centres in the district and relief has been provided to them, said relief and rehabilitation officer SM Rokha Rani Halder of the district administration.
People in the flood affected regions said water-borne diseases have been spreading in the district while road communication in different areas were disrupted.
Due to this year’s flood, the district’s agriculture office until now has calculated a loss of around Tk20 crore in crops and Tk50 crore in fish farming, confirmed Dr Arbindu Kumar Roy, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension.
WDB Executive Engineer Biswajit Boidda said: “All the rivers in the district have swelled, but flowing below the danger line. The water in the beels are flowing much above than the rivers in the district. As a result the flood situation is worsening.”
