Embankment collapse: Floods affect 200 families in Dacope Pazila

The sudden embankment collapse at 33 No Polder of 9 No Banishanta Bazar on the Poshur River in Dakop Upazila under the district affected at least200 families. Around 200 meters of the embankment flooded into the river on Friday noon (April 19, 2019).
Around 200 families have marooned and hundreds of acres of paddy field and around 100 shrimp enclosures washed away, said local public representatives.
several families have taken shelter in other villages as their houses went under water. Local UP Chairman Sudev Roy said, 2 villages – Banishanta and Amtala were flooded. If the repair work is not don in two or three days, the flood water is likely to reach Dakop Upazila.
Two villages under the same upazila have been flooded and 100 yards of Nolian Bazar have gone under water, said upazila parishad Chairman sheikh Abul Hossain.
The homeless Upendra Nath Mistri, Kamola Rani, Panchanan Mondal, Govinda Mistri, Krishna Pada Mondal and their families have taken shelter over Wapda embankment. Upazila parishad chairman Sheikh Abul Hossain said that he had talked to the high officials of the concerned authorities of the government in respect of the repairing of the embankment.
The homeless people have taken shelter over Wapda embankment.
Sharafat Gazi, Mohidul Islam, Sahana Begum and Konika Rani of Banishanta village said, “Suddenly the embankment collapsed and as such most of our croplands, fish enclosures, cattle and poultry and other valuables washed away, we are living inhuman lives without getting food and other necessaries.”
Over 500 acres of paddy field and around 200 shrimp enclosures washed away, said local public representatives.
Several families have taken shelter in other villages as their houses went under water. Villagers said, Villages of Banishanta and Amtala were flooded. If the repair work is not done within a short span of time, the flood water is likely to reach Dakop upazila Sadar.
Shahadat Hossain, Pronob Das, Saleha Begum and Shefali Rani of village Amtala said, “We are now in haphazard condition due to sudden embankment collapse, our crop lands, ghers (fish enclosures), ponds, houses were flooded.”
Ashraf Hossain, Executive Engineer (EX-En) of WDB said, We’ve already ade a protection embankment, if the villagers and local public representatives cooperate us, then the repair works of the embankment will be possible speedily.
