The government has announced a plan to give three more months of aid to support 380,000 families in the haor areas in six districts suffering from this year’s floods.
The Disaster Management Department will provide 30kg of rice from November to January to the deputy commissioners of the districts to distribute among the flood victims. The support will go to 168,000 families in Sunamganj, 55,000 in Sylhet, 58,000 in Netrokona, 65,000 in Kishoreganj, 29,000 in Habiganj and 5,000 in Moulvibazar.
Sunamganj will get 15,120 tonnes of rice, Sylhet 4,950 tonnes, Netrokona 5,220 tonnes, Kishoreganj 5,850 tonnes, Habiganj 2,6010 tonnes and Moulvibazar 450 tonnes.
The crops of hundreds of thousands of farmers in the six districts were destroyed in floods caused by heavy rains and mountain runoff in April. The government distributed 30kg of rice and Tk 500 to 330,000 families in the affected areas between Apr 23 and Jul 31. The support was later extended by three months to Oct 31. The government has allocated a total of 34,200 metric tonnes for the affected families in the second round of aid from November to January.
Deputy commissioners have been instructed to distribute the rice at the union and ward levels.The deputy commissioners will have to submit ‘distribution reports’ within seven days of distributing the aid.
The deputy commissioners will receive their allotment after the authorities approve the freight transport.
