The water level of the Teesta basin is likely to rise 10cm above danger level in the Sunday, said Teesta flood monitoring agency .
Teesta Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) based their assessment on the trend of the rainfall in the upper catchment of the river in India’s Jolpaiguri and the incessant heavy rainfall in the upstream that has been continuing for the last couple of days. Under the influence of the heavy rainfall in the upstream from the days, the water level of Teesta, has been flowing 10cm above the danger level.
Teesta FFWC also reported that the water level of Teesta -Dharla might likely to rise in the next 24 hours. For this reason flood water inundated Five upazilas in the district after authorities were forced to open all the gates of Teesta barrage.
The Teesta Barrage Irrigation Project Warning Center said that the gates had to be opened due to huge pressure of water from upstream India.
At least 15,000 families in the 3 upazilas were marooned by the flood that also breached flood protection embankment at places in the district. A deluge of rain two days before Eid followed by overflow in the upstream Teesta, Dharla and Saniazan rivers resulted in a serious flood situation in the district. Many villages have already gone under water as four haors. The authorities have been forced to shut most of the education institutions in Saniazan Chor because of floods.
Md Anamul Kobir, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hatibanda said, they were monitoring the situation and had asked the higher authorities for relief for the affected people.
